What do you think is the cruellest painting in the world? 😱 After the assassination of Johan and Cornelis de Witt on 20 August 1672, the brothers were put on public display in the Groene Zoodje, the execution ground on the Vijverberg in the middle of The Hague. Their nude, flayed bodies hung for all to see from the gallows. It was the ultimate humiliation. Johan had been the most powerful man in the Dutch Republic for close to twenty years. His brother Cornelis had always stood by his side.
