Cleaning the dust off of the Battle of Waterloo - Rijksmuseum Behind the Scenes

Every day, hundreds of people are working behind the scenes of the Rijksmuseum to keep the museum running and to maintain the collection. But what happens when the doors are closed and the visitors have gone home? That’s what you can see in the series ‘Behind the Scenes at the Rijksmuseum’. In this first episode you can see how the largest painting in the Rijksmuseum is dusted off. Each painting must be assessed individually, so that a safe, specific, dusting method can be chosen. In case of a painting with a lot of impasto (relief in the paint) or an unvarnished modern artwork, a different dusting method can be chosen than shown here for example. The dusting of paintings is important for the preservation of the artwork and for an optimal visitor experience. Zo wordt er bijvoorbeeld bij een schilderij met veel impasto (reliëf in de verf) of een ongevernist modern werk, voor een andere afstofmethode gekozen dan hier getoond. Het afstoffen van schilderijen is belangrijk voor het behoud van het werk en voor een optimale beleving van de bezoeker.
